Telecommunications services in the Republic of Congo are facing interruptions as electricity shortages and difficulties obtaining diesel weaken operators’ backup power systems, according to regulator ARPCE.

The authority said checks found operators receiving an average of nine hours of electricity a day. Batteries supplied about six hours of backup, leaving generators to bridge the remaining gap at a time when fuel was difficult to obtain.

The disruption affects more than individual towers. Transmission systems, technical centres, network cores and data centres also depend on dependable power. Problems at major urban facilities can therefore affect rural sites linked to them.

Users have experienced unavailable services, interrupted calls and slower internet access, with mobile money also affected. ARPCE said it was coordinating with authorities, including the national petroleum company SNPC, over fuel supplies. The episode highlights the direct connection between energy reliability and the continuity of digital services.
