Opinion: A newsroom’s digital safety policy needs an incident owner

Analysis — A journalist-safety policy becomes useful when someone knows what to do in the first minutes of an incident.

MFWA’s new model policy includes digital threats among the risks facing reporters. Newsrooms adopting such a framework should identify who takes responsibility when an account is compromised, a reporter is impersonated or sensitive material is exposed.

The process should give staff a clear contact, a backup person and a way to seek help outside office hours. It should also explain how editors can preserve evidence and reduce further exposure without placing the whole burden on the affected journalist.

Training is part of the work, but it cannot replace organisational support. Freelancers and temporary contributors need a route into that support too. A practical exercise using a fictional incident can reveal gaps before a real problem occurs. The measure of a policy is whether people can use it under pressure, with responsibilities understood and assistance available.
