ZTE and Airtel have announced a commercial deployment of a combined FDD and TDD Massive MIMO solution on Airtel Gabon’s live mobile network.
The 3 November company release describes the deployment as a step towards greater network capacity and more efficient use of spectrum. ZTE reports improvements in site-level throughput, capacity and resource efficiency; these are vendor-reported measurements.
The announcement concerns a live-network upgrade rather than a declaration of nationwide 5G coverage. FDD and TDD are different approaches to separating wireless uplink and downlink transmissions. Combining capabilities is intended to help the operator respond to growing mobile-data demand while preparing its network for future development.
