Opinion: Startup funding reports should separate company cash from investor liquidity

A secondary share sale can be an important milestone without adding new operating cash to a startup. Treating every transaction value as money raised by the company obscures that distinction.

Public announcements and ecosystem databases should identify whether capital comes from newly issued shares, existing shares, debt or a combination. Where the split is not disclosed, the reporting should say so rather than invent a breakdown.

This is a transparency issue for the whole market. Founders, employees and investors benefit from understanding what a transaction changes. A clearer funding vocabulary makes it easier to compare businesses and evaluate financing trends without turning shareholder liquidity into an exaggerated growth-capital headline.
