Airtel Kenya has agreed to acquire 100 MHz of spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band for $65 million, expanding the resources available for its mobile network.
Airtel Africa’s half-year results disclosure says the assignment has a 25-year term and is subject to the Communications Authority of Kenya’s standard terms and conditions. The agreement was covered locally on 31 October.
Spectrum gives an operator capacity to develop services, but it is one part of deployment alongside sites, backhaul and equipment. The disclosure should therefore be read as a network investment milestone rather than confirmation that new coverage is already live everywhere. Customers will see the practical effects through subsequent network rollout and service availability.
