South African startup Vambo AI has released MORENA, a language-model family that puts African languages at the centre of development.
The company’s public Hugging Face collection includes base and instruction-tuned models, alongside smaller variants and formats intended for local inference. October reporting describes its 1.5-billion-parameter model as trained from scratch for 12 African languages, English and French.
This is a recent-release spotlight rather than a claim that the model first launched on 2 November. Open weights give developers material they can inspect and evaluate for their own applications. Availability alone does not establish accuracy for every language or task; teams will need to test the relevant variant against the needs of the people who will use it.
