Opinion: Business software should make leaving as clear as signing up

Analysis — Integrated business platforms promise to reduce the friction of running a company. They should also make it straightforward for a customer to retrieve its records and leave.

Recent launches such as Cirquu reflect demand for connected sales, inventory, accounting and customer-management tools. The more central a platform becomes to daily operations, the more consequential its export and migration choices become.

Customers should be able to see which records they can export, in what formats and at what cost before committing. An invoice download is not a substitute for a usable transaction history. Attachments, customer references and the relationships between records can matter just as much as a spreadsheet.

Vendors can build trust by documenting the exit path and offering a realistic export process alongside onboarding. That does not weaken the product’s value. It gives a business the confidence to adopt a system because it works, with a clear understanding of how its own information remains accessible.
